Calamity Jane was performed at Co-Operative Arts Theatre in Nottingham between Monday 11th October and Saturday 16th October 1993.

This musical Western is adapted from the celebrated stage-play and film. Calamity Jane is set in The Dakota Territory of America in about 1876. The action takes place in Deadwood City

The Story of Calamity Jane

The story resolves around the relationship between a hard-bitten, "gun totin'" girl called Calamity Jane. She tries to behave like a man, but cannot avoid showing her femininity at times, and Wild Bill Hickock, the legendary good-natured ex-peace officer turned Gambler.

Henry Miller is the proprietor of The Golden Garter. This is the saloon/hotel/theatre for the City of Deadwood. He has engaged and lavishly advertised the appearance of Francis Fryer, not realising, until Francis Fryer arrives, that Francis is a man and not the attractive female he is expecting. In fear of reprisals he agrees to Fryer appearing but this proves to be fatal and his fears of reprisal becomes fact.

The nationally famous Vaudeville star is Adelaide Adams and she everybody's heartthrob. In a weak moment, and to save Miller, Calamity states that she will secure Adelaide's services for Deadwood City. She leaves for Chicago, where she mistakes Adelaide Brown's dresser for the great lady herself. The dresser, Katie Brown is an attractive stage struck girl who seizes the opportunity to further her own career, and impersonates her employer. Returning to Deadwood, her impersonation is a failure, but given the opportunity she shows she has talents of her own and soon becomes a popular success. Danny Gilmartin, an army officer attached to the local fort, soon becomes attracted to her, much to the annoyance of Calamity, who also is attracted to him. Danny does not have his own way as Bill Hickock indicates his interest.

The Commanding Officer of the Fort invites all the residents of Deadwood to a dance. Bill and Danny compete for the chance of taking Katie. Lots are drawn and Danny wins. Bill escorts Calamity. Katie has persuaded Calamity to dress like a girl and her appearance reveals her true beauty making her the centre of male attention and arousing Bill's feelings for her, and Calamity responds. The show ends as Danny and Katie marry, and we are persuaded that everybody will live happily ever after.
