The story unfolds as Higgins undertakes the task, carefully watched by Pickering. Alfred P Doolittle, Eliza's ne'er do well father, pays a visit to Higgin's home in Wimpole Street on the premise of liberating his daughter, when in actual fact he recognises the chance of making some money. Higgins is amused enough by the man's gall and sends him away with £5. Eliza has great trouble with her vowel sounds, and is deprived of meals until she gets them right. Suddenly all seems to fall into place and her first public appearance is at Ascot Races. There she meets Freddie Eynsford - Hill.
Her next outing is to the Embassy Ball and this proves to be the triumph everybody hoped for. In the midst of the celebrations, Eliza is forgotten and she begins to wonder what will become of her. Higgins appears to have lost interest in her and during the night she packs and leaves. Higgins and Pickering are unsettled by her disappearance, not knowing that Eliza has taken shelter with Higgin's mother. He only discovers this when he visits his mother and is shocked by Eliza's independence. He also begins to realise that he really misses Eliza but hates himself for having to admit it. When Eliza does return to his home, they both realise that the relationship has changed.

Story Synopsis
At heart, My Fair Lady is a touching fairy tale, the story of a bedraggled Covent Garden flower girl being almost magically transformed into a "Lady in a very short time. This happened as a result of a wager between two language and dialect experts, Professor Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering who accidentally meet outside Covent Garden and encounter Eliza Doolittle, a flower girl.
