Jesus Christ Superstar
Jesus Christ Superstar was performed at Round Hill School in Beeston between Monday 17th April and Saturday 22nd April 2006.
Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Introduced in 1970, it highlights the political and interpersonal struggles of Judas Iscariot and Jesus, and is told largely from Judas's point of view. The action takes place within the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. It includes such unforgettable songs as 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', 'Gethsemane' and 'Superstar'.
Originally appearing as a record because producers were afraid to take a chance on such a daring production, Jesus Christ Superstar eventually premiered at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York on October 12, 1971 and has since gone on to be revived as a West End and Broadway production and a feature film recorded in 1973 starring Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson. It's revival on the West End and subsequent touring productions led to another staged musical film version in 2003 starring Glenn Carter as Jesus.
As the crowds in the street grow more and more out of control, the rift between Jesus and Judas grows. After watching Jesus lose control in the Temple, lashing out at the moneylenders and merchants, then begging to be left alone when a crowd of cripples and lepers surround him asking to be healed, Judas is more convinced than ever that the man from Nazareth is just that, a man, and nothing more.
He decides that Jesus, having lost control of the mob, has become dangerous and must be stopped. He goes to the priests and gives them all the information they need to catch Jesus alone so that they can take him prisoner without risking violence by the mob.
After leading the soldiers to the Garden of Gethsemane, however, and watching the events that unfold, Judas soon realizes that he has been tricked by God into being the instrument of Jesus martyrdom.
Desperate, alone and full of guilt and remorse, Judas realises that the man from Nazareth will be remembered as a "Superstar," and so hangs himself.
Jesus is taken to Pontius Pilate who reluctantly agrees to the wishes of the gathering mobs and sentences him to death.
The musical ends with the depiction of John chapter 19 verse 41 and Jesus' ultimate sacrifice, his crucifixion.

May I take this opportunity to welcome you here today for our production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". It seems a long time since we first planned to produce this superb musical at the Duchess Theatre, in fact it was in 2002!
Unfortunately, as you all know, the theatre was destroyed by fire and despite much hard work by a dedicated group of enthusiasts, the funds with which to carry out the rebuild have been hard to acquire. To date only the basic ground and steel works have been completed.
That it will be finished one day is not in doubt but it may well take a few years so, in the meantime, we are happy to utilise the facilities of the Round Hill Primary School where we did our first production some 39 years ago!
"Jesus Christ Superstar" is a rock opera written by Tim Rice with the music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber telling the story of the last days of Jesus.
It is one of their early productions which, although loud and raw, completely takes hold of you with its compelling and dynamic music and lyrics that describe a scenario of love, intrigue, deceit, manipulation, and mob violence two thousand years ago.
We have tried hard to ensure that the set, lighting, music and sound are commensurate with the quality of this incredible musical. We think we have managed so to do but you are the jury, we hope you enjoy the result.
As I mentioned earlier,Beeston Operatic Society was formed some 39 years ago with our President, Michael Wright being one of the founder Members and we still have two other founder Members on stage tonight, Roma Drinkwater and Mollie Harwood. We must have done something right!
Five years ago we took the decision to change our name to Beeston Musical Theatre Group in order to remove the word ‘Opera’ from the title in that we never perform operas and thought that perhaps it might give the wrong impression to would be recruits and audiences. Maybe it did and maybe it didn’t, either way we are still the same group with the same aims and ambitions which are basically to provide an opportunity for talented men and women to give an as professional performance as possible on a stage in front of a live audience. I think you would have to agree after tonight that they do just that
BMTG is not sponsored by any group, council or company. Our productions are funded from the ticket revenue, members' subscriptions, patron fees and fund-raising social events. If you feel that you would like to help beyond buying a ticket to see the show, why not become a patron? £10 is the base donation but you can give more of you so wish, (please!). Jane Hough, details later in the programme, would love to hear from you and as a Patron you will be sent a newsletter so that you can keep in touch with what's happening within our Society. We all hope that you enjoy your evening. If you do, tell your friends – if you don't - please tell us!
Kindest regards to you all.

A very warm welcome to Beeston Musical Theatre Group's performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. Jesus Christ Superstar chronicles the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth as seen through the eyes of one of his apostles, Judas Iscariot, who has become disillusioned with Jesus and the movement he has created with his apostles.
At the opening, Judas agonises over his perception that Jesus' followers have become fanatical and unrealistic, hailing him as a God and twisting his words into monstrous prophecies. After all,in Judas' mind, Jesus is only a man and a man with certain inconsistencies, as evidenced by his relationship with Mary Magdalene.
After leading the soldiers to the Garden of Gethsemane, however, and watching the events that unfold, Judas soon realises that he has been tricked by God into being the instrument of Jesus' martyrdom.
Desperate, alone and full of guilt and remorse, Judas hangs himself.
Jesus is taken to Pontius Pilate who reluctantly agrees to the wishes of the gathering mobs, and sentences him to death. As Judas reflects on what Jesus might have achieved, in the show's most famous musical number, 'Superstar', Jesus, badly whipped and beaten to near death, hallucinates his betrayal by those closest to him.
The musical ends with the depiction of 'John chapter 19 verse 41' and Jesus' ultimate sacrifice, his crucifixion. Our production features a unique vocal arrangement of this haunting ending, usually only performed as an instrumental. I would like to thank the Really Useful Group for allowing us to perform my arrangement of this number.
After a long wait to produce Superstar, we are delighted to bring you our traditional production of the musical. We have endeavoured to recreate the greatest story ever told in its original context and I would personally like to thank all those involved in helping us to do this, in particular Reverend William Bates.
Thank you all for your continued support of BMTG and this year's production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
