2002 ended on a very sad note for Beeston Musical Theatre Group when Walter Hayes passed away.
Walter Hayes had been instrumental in the founding of the Society in 1967 and was its staunchest supporter until the day he died. He was President of the Society for over 20 years, finally relinquishing the role in 2002 when our former Chairman, Michael Wright, became President.
Walter's interest in the Society never wavered and we remember fondly his presence, always with his trusty camera, at rehearsals, back-stage before curtain up and in the audience at our productions. "Photography Not Permitted in the Auditorium" was a sign Walter took no heed of and the cast always knew when Walter was in the audience from the flashes from his camera!
Whether just calling in to say a cheery "Hello" at rehearsals, at the show, attending the Annual Dinner or chairing the AGM we always had photos from Walter to record the visit. "Beeston Operatic Society" as Walter always knew us was represented by many Society Members at this Memorial Service on 15th January 2003 (which would have been his 92nd Birthday) and we sang "Bethlehem" from Martin Guerre in his honour.
At the service, the numerous photograph albums from Walter's home were on display and we are now the proud owners of all his "Beeston Operatic Society" albums. Our grateful thanks to Barbara and Alan Oxley for allowing us to keep these treasured memories for our archive.
We shall always remember with love and great affection our former President, Walter, and pledge to maintain the Society he was so proud of in his honour and his memory.
