Round Hill Primary School

Round Hill Primary School is where BMTG perform their shows and rehearse. They have an excellent stage in their main hall, with good-sized wings and lighting facilities.

The present school building was erected as a Junior School in the early 1950's to meet the needs of an expanding population. This was the result of growth in Beeston's industrial diversification.

The name Round Hill, however, is much older. We have to go back to the late Middle Ages to find its origins. Just to the north of the village centre there was located a small elevation called The Round Hill. Nearby was situated the village pinfold. This was a stone or wooden enclosure in which stray animals were kept. Across the lane (present day Foster Avenue follows its route) Beeston village stocks were erected. It was to these stocks that the unruly and unlawful were brought for punishment. The 'good' folk of Beeston could add their judgment by throwing rotting vegetables and eggs at these wrongdoers thereby adding to their misery. The village stocks remained in active use until approximately 1840.

The story goes that when deciding upon a name for the new 1950's school a local councillor, with an obvious sense of history, suggested 'Round Hill Junior School'. In 1986 Round Hill Junior School was amalgamated with Round Hill Infant School to create the present school - Round Hill Primary School.
